New book aims to support disability inclusion New book aims to support disability inclusion
World Vision UK has launched a new publication designed to support the inclusion of disabled children and adults in development programmes.
The book, Travelling Together โ how to include disabled people on the main road of development, is a free guide for international development workers and includes a unique one-day training course which has been tried and tested across cultural contexts.
Additional content includes the story of how World Vision is including disabled people in its work, and a compilation of the best resources available on disability inclusion.
80% of disabled people in developing countries live below the poverty line.
Neglected issue
Co-author and Senior Disability Programme Adviser at World Vision UK, Sue Coe, said: โAround 650 million children and adults are disabled worldwide. It is unacceptable that the needs of disabled people are not always taken into account in development programmes that seek to address the causes of poverty and improve quality of life for everybody in the community.โDisability is a neglected issue. This new publication has been designed to address why and how to include disabled children and adults in development work, and offers practitioners a source of ready-to-use, innovative training material, resources and information.
"More than 2,500 people in at least 28 countries have already received this training, and it's acted as an important catalyst for change wherever it's been delivered."
Travelling Together was funded by the UK governmentโs Department for International Development.
The book is available for free download. Large print, Braille and audio versions are also available on request.
