FWCC Press Release: PNG Gender Training of Trainers
Around 20 women have received skills and tools to enable them to critically analyse documents and current trends from a gender perspective. In a training organised and supported by the Fiji Womens Crisis Centre in partnership with local organisation Family and Sexual Violence Action Committee (FSVAC), women from as far as Simbu, Popondetta, Goroka, Lae, Daru, East New Britain and those from Port Moresby were brought together in efforts to strengthen the gender training capacity within PNG.
This training is a part of our greater efforts to build a cadre of strong gender trainers in the Pacific region, said Shamima Ali, Coordinator of the Fiji Womens Crisis Centre. These women are a part of a greater network of women working to eliminate violence against women in their countries and communities but they are also involved in efforts to bring about policy and legislative changes.
This training is the first of its kind for PNG a training that is targeted specifically at NGOs and it is really useful because it provides us with tools that enable us to critically look at the projects we are getting involved in with development partners for women in PNG, said Ume Wainetti, Executive Director of Family and Sexual Violence Action Committee.
"The training which began last week with sessions looking issues faced by women in the current PNG context and the work of Womens organisations is into its second week. The second week has a particular focus on sound gender analysis in current programs on violence against women and strengthens the skills of trainers in negotiating for Womens rights at policy/ project level," said Ms Ali.
"If I had received this training before I could have done better in my various negotiations for women at community level but now we know and we are in a better position for future negotiations," said Ms Wainetti.
The training is being facilitated by the Shamima Ali of the Fiji Womens Crisis Centre and a gender specialist Dr. Juliet Hunt at the Lamana Hotel and ends on Friday 29 June. The training is supported by AusAID through the Fiji Womens Crisis Centre. Some participants are also supported by Barrick Mining Company.
