Call for Submission of Papers: International Institute for Democracy and Electrorial Assistance

Theme: โ€œRegional Organizations and Inclusive Political Participation and Representationโ€

The International Institute for Democracy and Electoral Assistance (International IDEA) is an intergovernmental organization established in 1995, with member states across all continents. International IDEA aims to support sustainable democracy worldwide and assists in the development of institutions and the culture of democracy. At the interface between research, fieldwork and the donor community, International IDEA provides a forum for dialogue, builds networks of experts, develops training materials and provides strategic advice at the international, regional and national level, cooperating with a range of organizations.

The Inter-Regional Dialogue on Democracy (IRD-D) is a platform for engagement among Regional Organizations on democracy and related issues. The Inter-Regional Workshop on Regional Organizations and Inclusive Political Participation and Representation is an activity of the IRD-D.

The Inter-Regional Democracy Resource Centre, the full-time Secretariat of the IRD-D, invites the submission of papers providing information and an analysis of the role of Regional Organizations in promoting and encouraging inclusive political participation and representation. The papers should be pragmatic and policy-oriented. The papers will be part of the background material used for the Inter-Regional Workshop on Regional Organizations and Inclusive Political Participation and Representation, which will be held in October 2012. These papers could also be used in other ways by International IDEA in accordance with the conditions of the agreement.

The papers will focus on a Regional Organization (or a group of regional organizations) that is participating in the IRD-D and its (their) regional context(s); present the activities of the Regional Organization(s) to promote and encourage inclusive political participation and representation; identify the challenges that the Regional Organization(s) face(s) and how these are addressed; and present policy recommendations to improve the effectiveness of the work of the Regional Organization(s).

The Regional Organizations participating in the IRD-D are the African Union (AU), the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), the European Union (EU), the League of Arab States (LAS), the Organization of American States (OAS), the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC) and the Pacific Islands Forum (PIF).

Possible topics for the papers include (but are not limited to) the following:
