Jamaica Tables Disabilities Act

Members of the disabled community have welcomed the move by the Government to finally table in Parliament legislation to give full protection to persons with disabilities.

The long-promised Disabilities Act of 2014 was tabled in Parliament by Labour and Social Security Minister Derrick Kellier just over one week ago.

This was almost 11 years after then Prime Minister P.J. Patterson promised the nation that a national disability act would be introduced in Parliament to give legislative protection to people with disabilities.

But since that, it has taken at least 10 drafts, several promises from political administration and non-stop lobby from people with disabilities to finally get to this point.

“The fact that it has been tabled and is now on the legislative agenda is something we are really happy for,” said Gloria Goffe, executive director of the Combined Disabilities Association.
