Disabled kids let down by school system

Nearly 500 000 disabled children are "barred" from going to school.

The Right to Education for Children with Disabilities campaign estimates that just over 470 000 disabled children of school-going age are denied an education.

A Stats SA report released this month states that many children with moderate to severe disabilities "fall through the cracks" of the education system.

It said school attendance was lowest for children with severe difficulty in walking, communicating and hearing.

The report highlights "barriers" that disabled children face in getting an education, such as: Most special-needs schools being unable to enroll more children;

Negative attitudes; and Lack of support services, such as inadequate training of teachers at mainstream schools in the education of the disabled.
