ADDC update - International Day of People with Disability, 3 December

Dear ADDC members

Welcome to this special update in the lead up to International Day of People with Disability next week on Wednesday 3 December – http://www.idpwd.com.au/3-december/ . International Day of People with Disability marks an important opportunity for organisations and individuals to promote an understanding of people with disability, and encourage support for their dignity, rights and well-being.

This is a great opportunity to showcase the work your organisation is doing in disability inclusive development by holding a morning tea for staff, talking with your supporters/members or joining social media activities to promote the day. Let us know how you are planning to celebrate the day so we can help promote your activity and include a wrap up of events in the December ADDC bulletin.

Materials

This year, ADDC has been working with CBM Australia to debunk some of the everyday attitudinal barriers that many people with disability face in developing countries. Some materials are attached to help support your organisation’s activities including suggested facebook posts and tweets, facts and stats for media releases and blogs (which could be supplemented by your own case studies) and a short news article.

Video

A powerful video Make Your Attitude Count – http://goo.gl/9L4cy0 has also been created which can be used internally and externally. Below are some suggested questions that could be used for internal staff events:

- after watching the video, what statement resonated the most with you? Why?

- when have you encountered/witnessed discrimination towards people with disability?

- within your role at work, what is one thing you can start doing from today to be more inclusive of people with disability?

Social Media

You can help promote International Day of People with Disability by using the #IDPWD on twitter and join a twitter forum being held at 1.30pm on December 3 (see @ADDCnews and @CBMAustralia).
