"Degrees of Independence: Providing Inclusive Learning in Higher Education" 16th โ€“ 17th April 2009 Canalside West, The University of Huddersfield The University of Huddersfield together with Huddersfield University Studentsโ€™ Union calls for conference papers on access to Higher Education for disabled students. Papers are invited on the following themes from partners in Higher Education including disabled students; disability studies students; disability support/services staff; people working in HE planning and provision; and teaching staff:

Conference themes:

Enabling transitions into Higher Education for disabled students Inclusivity in Learning, Teaching and Assessment Raising the Profile of Disabled Students Inclusive learning โ€“ the local experience In our own voice - Disabled Students' experience of Higher Education

The first day (Thursday 16th) will be a student-led event by regional Students' Unions. Academic papers are scheduled for the second day (Friday 17th).

- Individual papers and/or presentations of 15-20 minutes.

- Group 'panel sessions around a central topic, theme, or approach.

- Workshop sessions on supporting or teaching disabled students.

- Poster display

Poster display submissions could be on:

- Current or recent research on disability and/or learning in higher education

- Artistic work โ€“ art, creative writing or similar โ€“ relating to conference themes (including disabled studentsโ€™ own views of their experience)

- Other research by disabled students, outside of the conference themes

Accessibility

Accessibility is central to the conference. Presenters should consider physical, sensory, and intellectual access when preparing presentations, including verbally describing key details and meanings of charts and pictures and subtitling any film. All plenary sessions and some presentations will be signed in BSL (according to booking form preferences).

All printed materials will be published in Arial 12 point font on cream paper as standard, as well as other printed formats โ€“ please list your preferences on the booking form. Documents will be available in PDF format also.

Canalside West was designed as an accessible building and has accessible toilets. Some rooms on other floors will be used, accessed via a lift in the foyer.

Submission details for conference presentations

Proposals are invited for individual proposals, panels and poster presentations:

Individual:

Individuals are encouraged to submit proposals for individual papers and/or presentations of 15-20 minutes. Individual papers will be presented in themed slots with 2 to 3 other papers, with questions at the end of the session. Word limit for individual proposal: 200 words.

Panels:

Groups of individuals are encouraged to submit proposals around a central topic, theme, or approach. Proposals should aim for a total length of no more than 75 minutes, including time for responses, discussion, and questions. Please include names of all panelists and presentation titles, and a brief description of each paper/presentation. Word limit for panel proposal: 500 words.

Poster Session:

A poster display area will be available, at which individuals or small teams can present a visual display of research. This can be on:

- Research on disability or learning

- Artistic/creative work on conference themes (including the student experience)

- Research by disabled students in other fields Poster presenters should plan on being in attendance at the poster session for 20 minutes over lunch, to answer questions and provide verbal descriptions. Word limit for poster presentations: 200 words.

A submission form is attached. Please submit one form for each separate submission idea (group or individual). The deadline for submissions is Friday 26th February. Electronic versions of the papers will be needed by 6th April.
