National Down Syndrome Awareness Day 20th October

The official National Down Syndrome Awareness Day is held on the 20th October each year with a specific theme. This day is celebrated around the country by our branches hosting functions in their area. Some of the various activities in the past have been 'Buddy Walks' at the Johannesburg Zoo, Ladies teas, Picnics, Sports day, etc. During this time (usually for a week around the 20th October) we give talks at schools and companies and also sell awareness materials like rubber bracelets, stickers and green ribbons. We encourage the public out there to participate and assist us in our constant strive to raise awareness around Down syndrome and dispell many myths and mistruths about the condition. Should you be intrested in assisting us please contact the National office on 0861-DOWNSA (0861-369-672) or the closest branch to you.

20th OCTOBER 2009 - "ITS ALL IN THE GENES"

National Down Syndrome Awareness Day falls on the 20th October each year. Down Syndrome South Africa (DSSA) proudly announces the launch of our new awareness campaign. IT'S ALL IN THE "GENES". With Down syndrome being a Genetic condition we aim to create awareness around Down syndrome and promote the abilities of people with the condition.

We will be launching "IT'S ALL IN THE GENES" campaign via press releases, public speaking, television and radio interviews, community events, talks at school and businesses as well as selling our skin mark tattoos.

All we ask is that the general public support us on this day (20th October 2009) by wearing ‘Jeans' and pay a fine of R5.00 to DSSA or your local branch/support group for doing so. We also have skin mark tattoos available at R5.00 each (See logo) and so people can wear the jeans and tattoo for R10.00.

In South Africa, Down Syndrome is the largest single cause of intellectual disabilities affecting one in every 650 children born each year. It is therefore vital to raise awareness and make a difference – to change society preconceived ideas and prejudices that they might have.

DOWN SYNDROME SOUTH AFRICA has 9 regional branches and support groups across the country who will be hosting activities to celebrate National Down Syndrome Day. These awareness days play an important part in the positive shift in attitudes towards people with Down syndrome and other intellectual disabilities. However it is necessary to have ongoing efforts at ensuring these positive attitudes.

Persons with Down syndrome and other intellectual disabilities will speak for themselves and will express their feelings and show that they are very much like you and I! People with Down syndrome and intellectual disability are PEOPLE FIRST!

Show your support and contact us on 0861 DOWNSA (0861-369 672) or your nearest branch. For more details please visit our website www.downsyndrome.org.za Help us raise awareness and assist in this important initiative.

ALONE WE CAN DO SO LITTLE – TOGETHER WE CAN ACHIEVE SO MUCH!
