UK Ratifies Convention 8th June but with reservations

Unfortunately despite our best efforts the UK Government has ratified the UN Convention on the Rights of People with Disabilities with 4 reservations and an interpretive declaration. See ministerial statement below. WE are now fighting to ensure these are reviewed by Ministries on a fixed timescale. The Home Office has already agreed to review within 2 years.

Article 12.4 because no regular review mechanism exists for those who hold benefits for disabled people some 850,000. The DWP has set up a working party to bring them in line with Convention.

Article 18 Immigration Home Office agreed to review within 2 years

Article 24 DCSF insist that special schools should be interpreted as part of general school system

Article 24 for certain disabled children to be educated away from local area in residential schools.

Article 27 exemption on employment of armed forces.

We are also struggling to make sure that under Article 33 representative organisations of disabled people are formally involved in monitoring and implementation.
