Special ID cards for disabled persons from next month in Pakistan.

ISLAMABAD: The Ministry of Social Welfare in collaboration with National Authority for Database and Registration Authority (NADRA) would issue special ID cards for disabled persons from next month.

These ID cards carrying a universal logo of disabled person, would enable them to get their own identity and benefits in various schemes for the welfare of disabled persons, Minister for Social Welfare and Special Education, Ms Samina Khalid Ghurki said on Tuesday.

She told APP that the purpose of these cards is to facilitate the disabled persons enabling them to claim concessions on traveling fares of Pakistan International Airlines and Pakistan Railways as well as free medical treatment in public sector hospitals.

The facility would also prove as helpful in provision of flour (atta) under atta subsidy scheme of the Pakistan Bait-ul-Mal.โ€œIt is a step towards independence and empowerment of persons with disability and will ensure their contribution in the progress of their country,โ€ she remarked.

Ms Samina Ghurki said that the ministry was making utmost efforts to provide relief to the poor and needy for the sake of their improved living standards.โ€œThere was a need to treat these persons as normal citizens and the ministry was taking concrete steps for the capacity building and skill development of special children,โ€ she added.

In this regard, the ministry has launched various awareness campaigns for the rural masses regarding the welfare projects to facilitate the disabled, deserving persons and eradicate child labor.

Talking about the implementation on the 2 per cent employment quota for the disabled persons in government departments, she said that government has taken concrete steps in this regard and directed all the ministries/divisions to observe the 2 percent quota for disabled.
