Disabled often 'relegated'
DESPITE achievements, progress and commitments made through the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, existing national disability policies and programs often fail to meet the needs of disabled citizens.
While opening the Pacific Disability Forum's regional conference in Nadi, the Secretariat of the Pacific Community's (SPC) deputy director-general Fekitamoeloa Utoikamanu said this was attributed to a whole range of reasons.
"This includes the lack of enforcement, stakeholder capacity, disability awareness and collaboration among key partners," he said in Nadi yesterday.
