We are excited to announce the launch of a new section of our website: 'The Forum 08 in Review' ( http://awid.org/eng/Forum-08-in-Review ) . At the last AWID Forum, nearly two thousand women's rights activists gathered in Cape Town to debate and strategise around the 'Power of Movements'.

The Gender Justice Uncovered 2010 Awards: Voting Now Open!

The Gender Justice Uncovered 2010 Awards seek to identify the best and worst decisions or statements related to gender made in English or in Spanish within a judicial process.The Awards will highlight decisions or statements made in writing by judges, courts, committees, administrative bodies, prosecutors, defense attorneys, ombudsman officers, UN Committees, asylum boards or any other actor within a legal case, which have a positive or negative impact on gender equality, including those related to sexual and reproductive rights, gender violence and gender discrimination...The People's Choice Awards will be granted based on the votes from the public. Asia-Pacific Capacity Development on Gender and Macroeconomic Issues: 1st Regional Intensive Training Course

June 14-25, 2010 Bangkok, Thailand

In January 2010, UNDP Asia-Pacific Regional Centre, with support from the Government of Japan through the UNDP-Japan Partnership Fund, has initiated a new capacity development project on gender and macroeconomic issues. The objective of the course is to enhance Asia-Pacific countries' capacity in gender-responsive policy making, especially on macroeconomic issues such as trade, fiscal and monetary policies, finance, and economic crisis. Apply by April 30, 2010.

G(irls)20 Summit

June 16-18, 2010 Toronto, Canada

The viral global campaign to solicit grassroots ideas on how to reach the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) that most impact women and girls will culminate in the inaugural, ground-breaking G(irls)20 Summit. The Summit will bring together one girl from each of the G20 countries to Toronto ten days before the official G20 Summit. This inaugural G(irls)20 Summit will reconvene prior to next year's G20 Summit in France. Ultimately, the goal is to bring the economic prowess of girls and women to the attention of G20 leaders and ensure that the role of girls and women claims a place on future G20 agendas.

Reminder: Call for Applications: CREA's 4th Global Sexuality, Gender and Rights Institute: Exploring Theory and Practice

The Sexuality, Gender and Rights Institute is an annual, week-long, residential course that focuses on a conceptual study of sexuality. It examines the links between sexuality, rights, gender, and health and their interface with socio-cultural and legal issues. Participants will critically analyze policy, research and program interventions using a rights-based approach. Deadline for applications: April 18, 2010.

Call for Pre-Proposals: Gender and Citizenship in the Information Society: An Asia-wide Research Program

IT for Change, a nonprofit organization located in India has announced a call for pre-proposals under its Gender and Citizenship in the Information Society, an Asia-wide research program organized with the support of the International Development Research Centre (IDRC). Individual researchers or research teams affiliated to a recognized and reputable institution can apply under this program.Deadline for pre-proposals: April 28, 2010.

Call for Applications: OHCHR: Indigenous Fellowship Programme 2011

Applications are invited for attending the 2011 Indigenous Fellowship Programme, which runs from 1-4 months for different languages (English, French, Spanish and Russian). During the Programme, selected Fellows will be based at the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) in Geneva, Switzerland. The Fellows will undergo interactive trainings on topics such as the work of OHCHR, the UN system and mechanisms etc. Deadlines for applications: May 31, 2010 (English speaking), June 30, 2010 (Spanish speaking), October 1, 2010 (French speaking) and October 29, 2010 (Russian speaking).

Reminder: Call for Applications: 15 PhD fellowships within the Marie Curie Initial Training

An exciting opportunity has arisen for highly motivated early stage researchers (ESR) with strong training in social sciences and or economics to join the Marie Curie EDUWEL Initial Training Network (ITN) for three years from 1 July 2010. The ITN "Education as Welfare - Enhancing opportunities for socially vulnerable youth in Europe" funded by the European Commission consists of 15 partner institution from 9 countries with interdisciplinary research experience (education, sociology, political science, economics, philosophy) and expertise based in leading European university departments and social, economic and political stakeholders. Deadline for applications: April 15, 2010.

Call for Proposals: HIV Young Leaders Fund

The Fund seeks grant proposals from organizations working to address the needs of young people most-affected by HIV in their communities, including young people living with HIV. Deadline for applications: May 1, 2010.

Deadline Extended: 3 Calls for Proposals: UNIFEM: "Campaigns to End Violence against Women and Girls", "Working with the Security Sector to End Violence against Women and Girls", and "Working with the Justice Sector to End Violence against Women and Girls"

The knowledge asset on "Campaigns to End Violence Against Women and Girls" (distilled programming guidance, programme examples and case studies) should be tailored to provide practical guidance for the development and implementation of campaigns that address gender-based violence specifically. The focus of the module "Working with the Security Sector to End Violence against Women and Girls" is to provide 'state-of-the-art' how-to guidance on working with the security sector to prevent and respond to violence against women and girls. The focus of the module "Working with the Justice Sector to End Violence against Women and Girls" is to provide 'state-of-the-art' how-to guidance on working with the justice sector (in particular, the informal justice sector) to implement legislation and human rights standards related to ending violence against women and girls. Deadline for proposals has been extended to April 23, 2010 and for the knowledge asset to April 27, 2010.

A New Publication: "Maternal mortality for 181 countries, 1980-2008: a systematic analysis of progress towards Millennium Development Goal 5"

Maternal mortality remains a major challenge to health systems worldwide. Reliable information about the rates and trends in maternal mortality is essential for resource mobilisation, and for planning and assessment of progress towards Millennium Development Goal 5 (MDG 5), the target for which is a 75% reduction in the maternal mortality ratio (MMR) from 1990 to 2015. The authors assessed levels and trends in maternal mortality for 181 countries.

A New Resource/Video: Witness: Sex Workers Rights in Macedonia: "You Must Know About Me" - Excerpts

In Macedonia, as throughout the world, sex workers are pushed to the margins of society by a combination of prejudice, discrimination, and violence. Yet, the fact that a person sells sexual services cannot be used as justification for the denial of their fundamental rights, to which all human beings are entitled. "You Must Know About Me" is a first-hand account of sex workers' experiences and aspirations off and on the streets.

A New Report: UNDP: "Power, Voice and Rights: A Turning Point for Gender Equality in Asia and the Pacific"

The report focuses on the critical question of advancing gender equality, as seen through the prism of women's unequal power, voice, and rights. Despite the region's many economic gains, the Report chronicles how in many instances women across the region continue to be held back and disadvantaged. Even as many women have benefited from their countries' improved education, health, and prosperity, they continue to face barriers to the same opportunities available to men.

APPEALS AND URGENT ACTIONS

Urgent Action: Support Mahtab and Saleh by Sending an Email

IRQR is contacting you to request your assistance on a very urgent case involving Mahtab, an Iranian transsexual, and her husband, Saleh. It is no secret that queer Iranians who flee to Turkey and other countries continue to face risks due to homophobia. This often results in depression and post traumatic stress symptoms. Mahtab and Saleh, fled Iran to Turkey in June 2007, but have still not received refugee status. The common complications that queer refugees experience are escalated for them because their file has been rejected by office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees in Ankara. Immediate attention by UNHCR is critical!

Take Action: Ensure the safety of LGBT activists in Surabaya, Indonesia

The Coalition for Sexual and Bodily Rights in Muslim Societies (CSBR) has been sending the the Call for Action to the Indonesian government to protest the cancelation of the ILGA Asia Conference and to ensure the safety of local activists and organizers who are still in Surabaya. You can join CSBR by sending this letter to the relevant ministers and authorities, the contact information of which is also available.

Take Action: Colombia: Death Treats Against Members of Luis Carlos Pรฉrez Lawyers' Collective

The Colectivo de Abogados Luis Carlos Pรฉrez (CCALCP)-a collective of women lawyers working in the departments of Santander and Norte de Santander in Colombia-provides legal counsel to victims of forced displacement, the Motilรณn Bari indigenous community, and the Association of Small Farmers of Catatumbo (ASCAMCAT). CCALCP works in some of the most embattled and remote regions of Colombia and is known for its research and strident reporting of human rights violations by all armed actors in that country's over 50 year-long civil war.
