Assessment of where Africa stands on womenโ€™s health - ECOSOC holds regional meeting in Senegal

The Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) is organizing its first regional preparatory meeting for the 2010 ECOSOC Annual Ministerial Review (AMR) on the theme of Women's Health, on 12-13 January 2010 in Dakar, Senegal. The regional meeting on womenโ€™s health will explore concrete opportunities in the Africa region to advance progress as well as share best practices, lessons learned, and continuing challenges, and initiate joint actions. The event will be organized around three interactive panel discussions on โ€œMaternal healthโ€, โ€œWomen and HIV/AIDSโ€ and โ€œEmpowering women to improve their healthโ€. Around 80 participants, among them government ministers, health and gender experts, policy makers, NGOs and business representatives will attend the event.

Senegalese President Abdoulaye Wade will deliver opening remarks on Tuesday, 12 January. ECOSOC President Sylvie Lucas, United Nations Assistant-Secretary-General and Special Adviser on Gender Issues and Advancement of Women Rachel Mayanja, and other high-level officials will participate in the two-day event.
