IX ICM Regional Midwives' Conference

The IX ICM Regional Midwives' Conference to be held from 19-22 November, 2009, at Hotel Marriott, Hyderabad comes at a crucial period when countries in the Region have acknowledged the crisis due to acute shortages of midwifery and nursing personnel and are taking steps to train and increase the number of midwives all over the World and particularly in this Region there has been a shift in womenโ‚ฌย™s choice for place of delivery from the home to hospital. This requires the presence of qualifi ed and skilled professionals in adequate number in institutions.

The achievement of MDG 5 requires skilled attendance at birth. At this juncture, issues related to quality and duration of training, scope of function, and regulation to practice need to be discussed and clarified. The ICM theme for International Day of the Midwife, 2009 The World needs Midwives now more than everโ‚ฌย further highlights the need to focus on midwives and midwifery today.

D. Call to Action

Sign the Petition

Dear Colleagues, Friends and Supporters,

We are writing to request that you sign on to a very important petition to be forwarded to the CEDAW Committee. This petition calls for urgent action be t aken to address Executive Order No. 003: Declaring Total Commitment and Support to the Responsible Parenthood Movement in the City of Manila and Enunciating Policy Declarations in Pursuit Thereof (the EO), which has resulted in a ban on modern contraceptives from all Manila City public health facilities and a denial of information or referrals for family planning services. As nearly half of all Filipino women have an unmet need for contraception, the effects of the Manila City EO are far-reaching, particularly for poor women.

The petition brings the CEDAW Committee's attention to the human rights violations that are resulting from the continued implementation of the contraception ban and calls upon the Committee to take urgent action. Specifically, it requests that the Committee: 1) take immediate action to repeal the EO, and 2) provide full access to reproductive health information and services by adopting the proposed Reproductive Health bill and increasing government funding for reproductive health services in compliance with its obligation to respect, protect and fulfill human rights. Please review the attached petition (here) and then sign on to the urgent action request by forwarding us your: Organization's NameRepresentative's Name and TitleCountry
