Job Announcemen: DPI Vacancy: Executive Director of Disabled Peoples' International (DPI)

Established in 1981, DPI is a global organization, headquartered in Canada, with National Assemblies (member organizations) in over 135 countries, operating regional offices in Africa, Asia/Pacific, Arabic, Europe, Latin America and the North America/Caribbean and working in English, French and Spanish. Any organization controlled by people with disabilities can be a member of the National Assembly of that country. Eighty percent of DPI's National Assemblies are in developing countries. DPI works through building consensus on issues. It achieves this by gathering leaders together to discuss issues at various levels.

Disabled People's International (DPI) invites applications from suitably qualified and experienced people to fill the above position. Ideally a person with a disability assumes this position. Therefore DPI encourages people with a disability to apply for the position.

Executive Director's Role

The Executive Director of DPI will undertake day to day tasks that support world council and accountable to the Executive Council. The position will have substantial overall management responsibility for 3 years, which may be extended to additional term.

Main Duties and Responsibilities

1. To act as secretary of the World Assembly, World Council and Executive Council

2. To develop and implement a strategic plan with the approval of World Council that will promote the development of a sustainable organization;

3. To develop and maintain strong working relationships with a range of key stakeholders including National Assemblies, Regional assemblies and offices,

professionals, people with a disability, government and non-government organizations, academic institutions and UN agencies.

4. To obtain funding from a range of sources for a range of projects and activities;

5. To manage the financial and other corporate functions of DPI

6. To promote DPI so that national assemblies' member organizations are aware of its existence and the benefits that flow from being a member;

7. To coordinate and monitor with the regional offices

8. To provide advice and support to the DPI councils as well as reporting to

Executive Council on six monthly basis;

9. To hire other staff in accordance with job descriptions and budgetary guidelines adopted by the World Council.

10. To provide support and direction to the staff members of headquarter and

any other casual staff as required.

11. To draft Job descriptions of the Regional Directors and inform the regional councils

12. To prepare annual budget and financial report and submit to the executive council via the treasurer.

13. To prepare annual plan and progress report and submit to the world council via executive council.

14. Other duties as directed by the Executive Council and the Chairperson

Donor Relations

Review and develop all elements of project proposals including budget Ensure familiarity with and adherence to donor procedures and requirements.

Professional Experience:

3.1. At least 4 years experience in the management and development of an organization in senior position preferably a Disable People Organisation.

3.2. Experience in program/project development, monitoring and evaluation

3.3. Knowledge and understanding of the human rights approach to working with people who have disabilities

3.4. Experience in fundraising and knowledge of the international funds & sponsors.

3.5. Knowledge of people with disabilities and development issues

3.6. Excellent networking and partnership skills

3.7. Sound leadership and financial management skills

Qualifications

Tertiary qualification in international development/relations, development studies and/or organizational development. Fluent writing, reading & speaking English, and preferably has the ability to understand and speak Spanish or French.

Performance

Annual performance objectives will be set by the World Council and Executive

Council through the development of an annual performance plan as described in the strategic plan. A review of job performance will be conducted annually against the objectives outlined in this plan.

Remuneration

Attractive remuneration packages will be given to the successful applicant/candidate subject to negotiation.

Conditions of employment

The successful applicant/candidate will be required to undergo an initial 6-month probationary period and will be required to sign a common law contract as per policy of DPI. The successful applicant will also be required to comply with the DPI roles and procedures.
