ECOSOC NGO News Bulletin April 19, 2010
1. "Financing for Climate Change: Gender Equality" - NGO Global Preparatory Meeting for the High Level Segment of the Economic and Social Council in 2010, 21 April
A special civil society event is planned as part of the NGO Global Preparatory Meeting for the 2010 High Level Segment of the United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC). The theme of the event is based on the agenda for ECOSOC this year which includes gender equality and the empowerment of women, and is entitled "Financing for climate change: Gender Equality." It is co-organized by the Office for ECOSOC Support and Coordination of the Department of Economic and Social Affairs and the NGO Committee on the Status of Women/NY.
The event will open with keynote statements by the United Nations Under Secretary-General for Economic and Social Affairs, Mr. Sha Zukang and His Excellency Mr. Hamidon Ali, President of ECOSOC. Her Excellency, Ms. Dessima M. Williams, Ambassador and Permanent Representative of Grenada to the United Nations and His Excellency, Mr. Jarmo Viinanen, Ambassador and Permanent Representative of Finland to the United Nations will follow with brief opening remarks.
The second part of the event will include presentations from a panel of experts on the topic of "gender equality and the empowerment of women related to financing for climate change." The panelists will be: Soon-Young Yoon, Vice-Chair, NGO Committee on the Status of Women/NY; Liane Schalatek, Associate Director, Heinrich Boell Foundation; Christian Holmes, Senior Advisor for Energy and environment at the USAID, Yuvan A. Beejadhur, Counselor, Sustainable Development Network and Office of the Special Representative, the World Bank; and Rachel Harris, U.S. Climate Change Campaign Coordinator, Womenโs Environment and Development Organization.

2. Participate in the "Development Strategies that Work Policy Forum"
You are invited to participate in the Development Strategies that Work Policy Forum, an online discussion area where stakeholders can exchange information, best practices and lessons learned based on their experiences implementing national development strategies. This online discussion is part of the Development Strategies that Work database,ย�a growing collection of policies, outcomes and analysis based on information provided by governments in the national reports or national voluntary presentations prepared for the Annual Ministerial Reviews of the Economic and Social Council.
As 2010 marks a crossroad for the promotion of gender equality, the first two Policy Forum discussions are focused on gender and how to reach national targets on equality and womenโs empowerment:
The Development Strategies that Work Policy Forum will be regularly updated with new e-discussions that focus on various aspects of national development strategies, from climate change management to economic growth, and from agricultural development to good governance.ย�
You are encouraged to contribute to this debate, and highlight any successful development strategies that may be replicated or adapted to other contexts.
3. Special Event to mark the International Year for the Rapprochement of Cultures, 21 April, 2010

Presentations by:
The Public Forum will be an opportunity for governments, civil society organizations, legislators, trade union representatives, academics, business groups and students to take stock of the latest developments at the global level that are having an impact on the multilateral trading system and identify steps that will contribute towards bolstering international trade flows and strengthening the WTO. It will also discuss the importance of the rules-based multilateral system in mitigating the effects of the economic and financial crisis and reflect upon the post-crisis agenda of the WTO. In addition, the Forum will look at the different actors that seek to influence the WTO, assess the factors and issues shaping world trade and brainstorm on the way forward.
Civil society representatives interested in organizing a session during the 2010 Public Forum should fill out the Call for Proposals Form before 7 May 2010.
