Written consensus between National Federation of the Disabled Nepal and Nepal Government, on the demands of persons with disabilities

It is well known that, the persons with disabilities have been protesting for last more than one month against the government while their representation was overlooked in the proportional election process of CA. This protest was continue demanding the representation of persons with disabilities in CA through the 26 seats to be nominated by the cabinet. When the government and political parties didn't listen their demand despite their gentle and peaceful protest, the persons with disabilities had been sitting in relay hunger strike for last 11 days. During the relay hunger strike, many key leaders of major political parties came to see the member sitting for hunger strike. They accepted the mistake that the political parties have made by overlooking the representation of persons with disabilities in the proportional election process of CA and also expressed their commitment to take maximum initiations to ensure the representation of persons with disabilities in CA through the 26 seats to be nominated by cabinet. In the course of action, including about 200 parliamentarians of different political parities, human rights activists, member of civil society organizations and the key leaders of various political parties Mr. Arjun Narasingh K.C., Mr. Ramchandra Paudel, Mr. Prakash Saran Mahat, Dr. Minendra Rijal from Nepali Congress, Mr. Jhalanath Khanal, Mr. Bharat Mohan Adhikari and Mr. Pradeep Gyawali from CPN UML, Dr. Baburam Bhattarai from UCPN Maoist, Dr. Prakash Chandra Lohani from RPP Nepal, Mr. Mahendra Yadav from Terai Madhes Loktantrik Party have expressed their commitment and solidarity.

Simultaneously National Federation of the Disabled Nepal had been engaging in the dialogue with political parties and Nepal government. Ultimately the dialogue held between NFDN and Nepal Government today (February 15, 2014) in the office of Prime Minister office held today, a written consensus has been developed on the demands put by NFDN. The main point of the consensus is as follow.

• Nepal government shall take maximum initiation to ensure the representation of persons with disabilities in constituent assembly while holding dialogue with different political parties for the nomination of 26 seats in constituent assembly.

The representative of NFDN, president Mr. Shudarson Subedi and the secretary of Prime Minister's office Mr. Surya Prasad Silwal jointly publicized the written consensus in Bhadrakali today at 4 pm in the presence of key leaders of major political parties and ended the relay hunger strike continued for last 11 days. Further NFDN has also declared its stand to continue the other campaigns until the representation of persons with disabilities is ensured in CA through 26 seats.

Since this achievement has not come only by the effort of NFDN we want to express our deep thanks to the all personalities who have contributed by sitting in relay hunger strike, all member DPOs, organizations working for disability rights, persons with disabilities, civil society organizations, human rights organizations, journalists and media house, sister organizations of political parties, political parties, parliamentarians, Nepal Government, UN systems , international agencies, regional and district mechanism of NFDN, central members and all staff of NFDN, intellectual personalities and traders and all well wishers of NFDN who have poured their physical, financial and moral support continuously to succeed this campaign and get this achievement. NFND also expects same support in its future campaigns on disability rights.
