Summer Programme at Centre for Disability Law and Policy

International & Comparative Disability Law โ€“ Global & Regional Perspectives 24 May โ€“ 4 June 2010

The Centre for Disability Law and Policy, at the National Univeristy of Ireland, Galway, is pleased to announce its third Summer School. Previous Summer Schools focused mostly on Europe. This Summer School will focus on global and regional perspectives on disability law and policy.

A legal background is not assumed. It is open to all who are interested in how law and policy can advance the status of persons with disabilities.

It will cover the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities and key issues such as implementation and monitoring mechanisms (national and international), as well as key substantive issues such as legal capacity and the right to independent living.

It will also have a Regional Focus covering Asia/Pacific, Africa, Latin America (Organization of American States and selected countries) and Europe (European Union and the Council of Europe). And it will focus on advanced legislation and litigation in the United States of America and the United Kingdom.

It will incorporate a Moot Court Competition which will be facilitated by eminent international litigators who shall also act as judges. The exercise is not deisgned to test or evaluate students. It is designed to help students think through their argumentative strategies.

The Faculty includes some of the most distinguished lawyers and activists in the field including Professor Michael Stein (Harvard Law School Project on Disability), Professor Peter Blanck (Burton Blatt Institutute), Professor Nora Groce (University College London), Colm Oโ€™Cinneide (University College London), Michael Bach (Canadian Association for Community Living) and Eilionoir Flynn (specialist on comparative national disability strategies, Centre for Disability Law and Policy at the National University of Ireland, Galway). It is directed by Professor Gerard Quinn.
