Visually-impaired workers withdraw strike

The 17 visually-challenged workers along with 14 other workers of Uma Precision Private Limited have withdrawn their hunger strike after the company agreed to discuss their reinstatement within a month.

The company had issued suspension orders to the workers in December 2009 for indiscipline and manhandling an officer of the company.

โ€œDespite the labour court order, the company refused to reinstate the workers. We had even approached the disability commissioner and the labour commissioner on this matter,โ€ said advocate Vaishali Sarin, counsel for the workers.

However, a company official said that an inquiry regarding the gross misconduct is underway. โ€œAs promised, the company is paying Rs 2 lakh per month towards salary of the 31 suspended workers and will continue till the inquiry is over,โ€ he said.

The firm has nearly 500 employees. It had employed the suspended workers in its punching unit. They had been working since 2005.
