Proposal for SMS subsidy for the deaf

KUALA LUMPUR, March 29 (Bernama) -- The government has been urged to give SMS subsidy to the 50,000 deaf registered with the Welfare Department.

"The subsidy will not be a burden as the SMS charge is not high," Datuk Shahrir Abdul Samad (BN-Johor Bharu) said when debating the motion thanking Yang di-Pertuan Agong Tuanku Mizan Zainal Abidin for his parliament opening address.

He said the subsidy was important to the deaf as SMS was an important communication tool for them.

Chong Eng (DAP-Bukit Mertajam) asked male members of parliament (MP) to take cases of abandon babies seriously as it involves humanitarian aspect.

"Please ask the men to be more responsible. Don't run and leave the mothers as they may abandon the babies," she said.

Newspapers and Puteri Umno had launched a campaign to address the issue of abandon babies.

Chong praised Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Tan Sri Musa Hassan for urging the public not to condemn unwed mothers as it would force them to abandon their babies.

Police statistics over the last ten years showed that there were 815 cases of abandon babies recorded with 433 deaths.
