UNDP/UNITAR e-Learning Course on "Human Development Impact Assessment of Trade Policy" (20 Sept to 22 Oct 2010)

UNDP and UNITAR will be offering an instructor-led five-week e-Learning course on "Human Development Impact Assessment of Trade Policy" without charge. The course is aimed at all those who wish to learn more about qualitative and quantitative methods of reviewing a countryโ€™s trade policy from a human development angle and have an interest in utilizing evidence based policy making.

Human Development Impact Assessment (HDIA) aims to mainstream human development concerns into domestic policy-making. Through demonstrating the likely effects of a particular episode or change in trade policy on peopleโ€™s lives, the HDIA facilitates a greater understanding of the implications of policy decisions while creating greater awareness and fostering more informed debate. HDIA can be applied to get a better understanding of the โ€˜realโ€™ implementation costs of trade agreements, which otherwise remain hidden in more conventional economic analyses.

Accordingly, the objective of the course is to enhance informed decision-making in trade policy formulation and to present a series of innovative tools that go "beyond GDP" and traditional economic analysis to assess the impact of trade policies and agreements on peopleโ€™s lives. At the end of the course, the participants will be able to interpret the linkages between trade and human development and to chose and apply in their own policy environment a variety of tools and data for undertaking an HDIA.
