LG Telecom has donated 2,000 units of โ€œBook Reader Mobile Phoneโ€ designed for visually impaired users for World Braille Day this Wednesday through the Hasang Rehabilitation Center.

The phones are LG Electronicsโ€™ recently released Wine 3 mobile phones (LG-LH8600). They convert text and menu functions into voice and also include braille keypads. By pushing the โ€œOKโ€ button in the center of the phone, users can access 2,300 audio books, ranging from science to arts and the humanities. The service, made possible by LGโ€™s digital library in Sangam, Seoul, is free.

LG Telecom and the Korea Communications Commission jointly held a โ€œBraille Dayโ€ event at Namsan Park in Seoul. The event, organized by the Hasang Rehabilitation Center, had over 200 visually impaired participants plus Choi See-joong, chairman of the KCC, Jung Il-jae, chief executive officer of LG Telecom and Kwon In-hee, president of the Korea Blind Union.

Samsung Electronics also provides a mobile phone designed for visually impaired users. The phone, named โ€œTouch Messengerโ€ won the gold at the Industrial Design Excellence Awards in 2006.

LG Telecom said it will donate low vision magnifiers to the Hasang Rehabilitation Center, too.
