Disabled invited to participate in festivities

KUWAIT: The disabled, belonging to all nationalities, have been invited to participate in the 5th National Day of Solidarity for the Disabled. This festival will be held from Nov 5 to 15 under the patronage of HH the Amir Sheikh Sabah Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah.

The festival will be inaugurated on Nov 5 with a folklore celebration. "This traditional celebration should help strengthen national loyalty, and foster a sense of belonging to this country. It will also provide a view of the ancient life in Kuwait, and connect the present generation with the old generations," said Ali Al-Thuweini, the General Coordinator of Working Committees, during a press conference held on Sunday at the Kuwait Disabled Sport Club.

A slew of activities have been organized as part of the festivities. As part of this, a photography exhibition will be held at the Kuwait Disabled Sport Club on Nov 7. "This exhibition titled 'The Shot' will include different photos taken by the disabled, or by others, thereby focusing on issues related to the disabled," added Al-Thuweini.

The festival will also include a lecture for the disabled youth titled, 'Let's Try to Integrate.' This lecture will be held on Nov 6, and aims to voice the opinion of the disabled youth, who suffer from all kinds of disabilities to decision makers and the society of the importance of the integration. It will be held at the Kuwait Disabled Sport Club.

A Sports day will also be organized on Nov 8. "Different sporting events will be held for the disabled. Tournaments will be held in basketball, tennis, fencing and others. The public will receive a great chance to meet players, who will compete. It will be held at the Kuwait Disabled Sport Club," noted Anwar Al-Mutawa. On Nov 9, an 'Informative Exhibition' for two days at Souq Sharq.

Nov 10 is a red-letter day for the disabled. "The NGOs will gather on this day to discuss the Law for the Disabled and calls for its approval as soon as possible. I call on all the disabled and their parents to attend the Parliament session on this day. I seek the support of the MPs," stated Khulud Al-Ali, Deputy Chairman of the Voluntary Society for the Disabled. The Holy Quran competition is an important event that will be held during this festival. The final qualification for the Holy Quran competition will be held on Nov 10, at the Kuwait Disabled Sport Club.

The festival will also include an art exhibition for the creative, slated to be held on Nov 11 and 12 at the Kuwait Society for Down Syndrome. Different institutions and schools will participate in this exhibition, in addition to some famous artists, who will visit it to encourage the handicapped. The interested artists who are interested in displaying their art works, are welcomed to submit it at the Club.

This festival also focuses on disabled children. On Nov 12, a 'Kids Festival' will be held at Souq Sharq. "The Good Youth Voluntary Group has been participating in this festival since the past five years. We aim to join or integrate the disabled kids with the normal kids in order to be able to break barriers. We have chosen Souq Sharq, as it is open and large. I invite all the disabled and their families to join us," pointed out Anoud Al-Ali, Head of the Good Youth Voluntary Group.

The Al-Shaab Leisure Park is one of the sponsors of this event. They will hold an Open Day for the disabled and their families on Nov 14. Between 4 pm and 9pm, the disabled will be able to avail of the recreational facilities free of charge. Also, a party will be held at the Park. The festival will conclude on Nov 15 with a concluding ceremony to be held at the Kuwait Disabled Sport Club. Firms and individuals that participate and sponsor the event will be honored.
