Hospital crippled my son

A mother has lodged a complaint with police against two doctors at Rajavithi Hospital accusing them of maltreatment that caused her son to be born blind and deaf and with brain damage.

Pinyawas Yothi, 33, took her 17-month-old son Chaowarin Aungprasert to file the complaint yesterday with Phaya Thai police after an earlier approach to the Medical Council had made little progress.

Ms Pinyawas blamed a gynaecologist and a female doctor who had treated a blood clot in her left leg for causing her son's disabilities.

Before her pregnancy, Ms Pinyawas had undergone deep vein thrombosis (DVT) treatment and was prescribed the drug warfarin by Mission Hospital.

The hospital then referred her to Rajavithi Hospital, which provides specialist treatment for women, after she became pregnant in November, 2007.

The doctors at Mission Hospital advised that she receive injections for curing the DVT instead of taking pills to avoid side-effects to her baby, Ms Pinyawas said.

But a female doctor at Rajavithi Hospital continued to give her warfarin, insisting the drug could not harm her baby whose organs had been fully developed by the fifth month of her pregnancy.

But ultrasound checks indicated the baby was suffering brain damage, probably caused by warfarin, Ms Pinyawas claimed.

When she contacted the female doctor, her complaint was ignored. She said only medical students were sent to check on her condition and she continued to be prescribed with warfarin.

Her son was eventually born blind and deaf with brain damage. He has been living on a respirator, Ms Pinyawas said.

Phaya Thai police said they would summon the accused doctors to give statements before forwarding the case to related agencies such as the Medical Council, which will help determine if any malpractice had been committed.
