PNG to ratify Convention on disability

The Prime Minister Peter O'Neill announced yesterday at the Second Forum Disable Ministers Meeting in Port Moresby that PNG will ratify the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities this year.

Mr O'Neill in his welcome speech said that Papua New Guinea will ratify the convention in a parliament session later this year. He said the government of Papua New Guinea has policies on disabilities but have not fully utilized them to further its cause.

The Prime Minister said: "Our government is an inclusive government." "That means the disabled in the country will be recognized in the years to come." Mr O'Neill said that the able-bodied people should be creating a barrier-free environment that is encouraging and supportive of people with disabilities. He said that the people must make the disabled feel at home and involve them in whatever activities they are doing.

The Prime minister said that the Pacific Island Disable Ministers Meeting today was made possible by the former Member for Moresby South and Minister for Community Development, Youth and religion Dame Carol Kidu.

He said: "Dame Carol was attending the 1st Pacific Island Ministers Meeting in Cook Island in 2009 while she was then Minister for the department and requested to hold the second meeting in Papua New Guinea."

The Prime Minister welcomed all the ministers to Papua New Guinea and wished them a happy stay in the country.
