Summary: The U.S. Census Bureau has compiled a set of disability-related facts and figures as part of its Facts for Features series. Facts for Features consist of collections of statistics from the Census Bureau's demographic and economic subject areas intended to commemorate anniversaries or observances or to provide background information for topics in the news. This edition of Facts for Features commemorates the 19th anniversary of the signing of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA).

MDS-HC Functional Assessment Form - Massachusetts

Summary: This chart compares all the various tools used in the MA long term care system to the Minimum Data Set Home Care (MDS-HC). This format made it easy to see where there where gaps and redundancies in data elements. Sections include personal information (identification, referral, assessment) patterns (cognitive, community, vision, mood and behavior, social functioning), and health (support services, IADL, continence, disease, nutrition, medication) and other service utilization questions.

Money Follows the Person: An Early Implementation Snapshot

Summary: This issue brief examines the early successes and challenges of MFP. A 2008 survey of 29 states receiving MFP grants turned up several key findings, including that several hundred people have moved from institutional to community settings; that states are providing a broad range of services to facilitate transition; that housing issues for MFP participants are a major challenge for states; and that the severe economic downturn had not yet prompted states to scale back their efforts.

Partnership Plus Online Toolkit: Creating Opportunities for Vocational Rehabilitation and Employment Networks to Work Together

Still waiting. . .. . . the unfulfilled promise of Olmstead

Summary: The Bazelon Center for Mental Health Law issues this call to action to inform advocates, policymakers and the public about the vital role the Supreme Court's landmark decision plays in enabling people with mental illnesses to benefit from community life. The Olmstead decision is now 10 years old. According to the report, many people with mental illnesses remain segregated in board-and-care homes, nursing facilities and other institutions even though supportive community living is cost-effective.

The Texas Microboard Collaboration

Summary: A microboard is formed when a small group of committed family and friends join together with a person with a disability to create a nonprofit organization. This group develops a person-centered plan called a PATH (Planning Alternative Tomorrows with Hope) to address the individual's support needs.
