World Mental Health Day Today 10 October 2012

Today is World Mental Health Day. Mental Health is a key issue for those of us interested in disability and development. Poor mental health affects hundreds of millions of people globally, 80% of whom live in developing countries. An estimated 151 million people have depression, 26 million live with schizophrenia, and 125 million are affected by alcohol use disorders. In low income countries, depression represents almost as large a problem as malaria. The World Health Organisation urges that this is "one of the most neglected, yet essential development issues in achieving the MDGs".

This is because there is a strong and vicious cycle where poor mental health is both a key cause and consequence of poverty. Psychosocial disabilities can lead to compromised education, productivity, gender inequality, ill-health, violence and other poor development outcomes. This impedes the individual's capacity to work productively, realize their potential and make a contribution to their community. Persons with mental and psychosocial disabilities often face stigma and discrimination, as well as experience high levels of physical and sexual abuse, whichcan occur in a range of settings, including prisons, hospitals and homes. On the other hand, positive mental health is linked to a range of development outcomes such as better health, education, productivities, relationships and quality of life.

Unfortunately, in most developing countries insufficient resources are devoted to improving mental health. Up to 85% of people with serious psychosocial disabilities in developing countries do not receive any treatment, and 31% of countries have no specified mental health budget at all.

The World Health Organisation (WHO) has recognised that mental health is WHO has recognised that mental health is a development issue essential to achieving the MDGs.
